If you’ve been to the Outer Banks and you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’ve likely had the Duck Donuts experience. Well, prepare yourself to save the 170-mile trip, it is coming to Richmond.
Duck Donuts started in Duck, N.C., in 2006 and has grown to four shops in the Outer Banks. The first franchise outside of North Carolina opened in Williamsburg this past fall and there will soon be two in Virginia Beach.
Duck Donuts has a fun made-to-order process for customers to get their doughnuts. You can select among its fresh-made cake doughnuts and an array of glazes and toppings to create the doughnut the way you want.
And from personal experience, the prices (in Summer 2013) weren’t bad either.
Co-owner Robin Griffith confirmed that Duck Donuts awarded a franchise for Richmond but has not selected a site and does not have a time-frame for when the franchise might open. In fact, the owners are hoping to open franchises all over the country.
“We’re doing it slow and controlled, but trying to get out closer to our customers,” he said. They get many customers from out of the region who visit the Outer Banks, get hooked on the doughnuts and want more.
“We’ve got an amazing fan base. We ship donuts all over, folks from New Jersey, Ohio, California, everywhere,” Griffith said.
We’re going to leave it to you Richmond — where should the first Duck Donuts open?
