It is not uncommon these days to see black bears on the Dare County mainland.  This beautiful large specimen was spotted yesterday crossing through a field of wheat adjacent to the Dare County Landfill near Manns Harbor, a couple of hundred yards down fittingly named Cub Road. The landfill is adjacent to the Alligator River Nation Wildlife Refuge, which has the largest population of black bears in eastern North Carolina and one of the largest in the eastern United States. It is also home to many other species including the American Alligator and the Red Wolf. There are various tours during the summer months that are open to the public.bear
